Bauleni Youths Face Rape Charges After Woman Gives Birth to Twins

Two young men from Bauleni Township are currently appearing before the courts in Lusaka after being accused of raping a woman who later became pregnant and reportedly gave birth to twins.
The accused, Elias Zulu (27) and Davies Kawala (22), are facing two counts of rape. The case is being heard before magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli at the Lusaka Magistrates Court.
According to court records, the alleged incident took place on October 31, 2024. It is claimed that the two men were escorting the woman—referred to in court as Talisa (a pseudonym used to protect her identity)—when they allegedly turned on her near the perimeter fence of the Zambia Air Force in Bauleni.
Prosecutors told the court that the suspects allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the woman without her consent. The matter later came to light after the woman reportedly became pregnant and eventually delivered twins.
However, the accused have denied the allegations. In their defence, they claimed the encounter was consensual and alleged that the woman had offered to engage in sexual activity with them in exchange for payment.
The two men further claimed that they had agreed to pay the woman K300 after the encounter but failed to do so immediately. According to their account, the woman later threatened to report them for rape when the payment was delayed. During cross-examination, the prosecution dismissed the defence as a fabricated story meant to escape responsibility. The court has since ruled that the accused have a case to answer and placed them on their defence as the trial continues.
