The Ministry of Health has launched a cutting-edge Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plant at Kabwe Central Hospital, marking a major advancement in ensuring reliable access to life-saving oxygen for critically ill patients.
Officiating at the ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Elijah Muchima highlighted the essential role of medical oxygen in healthcare, especially in surgical theatres, neonatal care, and intensive care units.
“Medical oxygen isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. This commissioning reflects the New Dawn Government’s firm commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and safeguarding lives,” said Dr. Muchima.
Before the plant’s installation, Kabwe Central Hospital was spending approximately K150,000 monthly to purchase oxygen, consuming around 20 cylinders daily at K500 each. The new facility will now provide a consistent, cost-efficient, and uninterrupted oxygen supply, significantly enhancing patient care.
“This plant breathes new life into Kabwe Central Hospital. It’s a beacon of hope, a clear message that every life and every breath matters,” Dr. Muchima added.
The Kabwe plant is one of six being installed nationwide through support from the Global Fund and UNOPS. Other sites include the National Heart Hospital, Kalindawalo, Chinsali, St. Paul’s, and Kasama General Hospitals. To date, three plants have been commissioned—in Lusaka, Kasama, and now Kabwe—under a USD 10.4 million investment.
Dr. Elijah Mutoloki, Central Province Health Director, announced that two additional oxygen plants are already set up in the province—at Chitambo Hospital and the upcoming Kabwe Women, Newborn and Children’s Hospital—with commissioning dates expected soon.
The initiative aligns with the National Medical Oxygen Strategic Plan (2022–2026) and demonstrates the strong partnerships between the Ministry and key stakeholders including the Global Fund, UNICEF, PATH, CHAI, and the World Bank.
With each new plant, Zambia takes a vital step toward a robust healthcare system that ensures timely and effective medical response—because every breath matters.
