President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed gratitude following a courtesy visit from Mr. Ronald Ozzy Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. The visit took place in the wake of the passing of Zambia’s Sixth Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
During the meeting, Minister Lamola conveyed heartfelt condolences from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa, extending their solidarity during this period of national mourning.
President Hichilema and Minister Lamola held a respectful and substantive discussion focused on the arrangements for the late President Lungu’s burial. President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s unwavering position that Mr. Lungu should be laid to rest in his homeland, the Republic of Zambia — a decision underscoring the nation’s deep respect for its former leader.
President Hichilema also extended his sincere appreciation to President Ramaphosa for the medical care and support offered to Mr. Lungu during his illness in South Africa. In addition, he offered a formal apology to the South African National Defence Force for the logistical complications encountered during the repatriation of the late President’s remains on Wednesday, 18th June 2025.
The President’s remarks highlighted the spirit of regional solidarity and mutual respect that continues to define the relationship between Zambia and South Africa.
