President Hichilema to Launch $100 Million Chisamba Solar Plant to Boost Clean Energy

President Hakainde Hichilema is set to commission the Chisamba Solar Power Plant on Monday, marking a major milestone in Zambia’s transition toward renewable energy. Located in Central Province, the $100 million facility will produce 100 megawatts of clean power—an important contribution to the national goal of adding 1,000 megawatts of solar energy to the country’s electricity grid.

This landmark project is a cornerstone in Zambia’s strategy to reduce over-reliance on hydropower, which has become increasingly vulnerable due to climate change and fluctuating water levels. By embracing solar energy, the government aims to build a more resilient and diverse energy mix that ensures consistent electricity supply for both domestic and industrial use.

Energy Minister Peter Makozo Chikote stated that the commissioning of the Chisamba Solar Plant is more than a technical achievement—it’s a symbol of the government’s commitment to clean energy and long-term energy security. He noted that the project not only supports environmental sustainability but also aligns with President Hichilema’s broader economic and climate resilience agenda.

“The Chisamba plant represents a significant step in Zambia’s efforts to embrace sustainable development while strengthening our electricity infrastructure,” Chikote said.

In addition to environmental benefits, the project is expected to have a positive social and economic impact. With the capacity to supply electricity to between 30,000 and 50,000 homes annually, the plant will help reduce load shedding and improve the quality of life for many Zambians. The project will also create jobs during construction and operation, and stimulate growth in sectors that depend heavily on stable energy, such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.

ZESCO’s Department of Corporate Affairs added that the plant is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 120,000 tonnes each year—an important step toward Zambia’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.

As Zambia pushes forward with its clean energy goals, the Chisamba Solar Power Plant is expected to serve as a model for future renewable projects, reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a regional leader in sustainable energy Ódevelopment.
