Two-Year-Old Child Drowns After House Flooded by Heavy Rains in Kuku Township
A family of Kuku Township in Lusaka is mourning the death of a two-year-old baby who drowned after their house was flooded by heavy rains in the early hours of yesterday.
Police have identified the deceased child as Loveness Gwanda, who drowned between 01:00 hours and 02:00 hours. The incident was reported to Misisi Police Post by the child’s mother, Chisala Kalusha, aged 32, also of Kuku Compound.
In a statement, police public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi said preliminary investigations indicate that on the night of January 25, 2026, the mother left the child with her siblings in the sitting room before retiring to bed.
“Around 02:00 hours, the mother discovered that rainwater had flooded the sitting room, submerging the sofas, and that the child had drowned,” Mr Chilabi said.
Following the discovery, the matter was reported to the police, who visited and processed the scene.
The child was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The body is currently being kept at the UTH Mortuary, pending a postmortem examination and burial arrangements.
Police have since opened an inquiry to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
