Violence Reported in Chibulula and Chishi Ward By-Elections

Reports of violence have marred the ongoing by-elections in Chibulula and Chishi Wards of Northern Province, with incidents recorded in both Nsama and Mpulungu Districts.

In Chishi Ward, Nsama District, a fracas broke out at Mutumpike Polling Station following a misunderstanding between supporters of the Tonse Alliance and the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND). The altercation was reportedly triggered by disagreements surrounding the accreditation and presence of a polling agent. The situation created tension at the station before security personnel stepped in to restore order.

Meanwhile, in Chibulula Ward, Mpulungu District, violence escalated after UPND Kapembwa Ward Councilor, Joseph Kasongole, was attacked by a mob of voters earlier this morning. The incident is said to have occurred after Mr. Kasongole confronted a female voter on suspicion that she was carrying multiple National Registration Cards (NRCs).

According to eyewitness accounts, the woman explained that she had her own NRC along with that of her husband, who had asked her to deliver it to him at the polling station later in the day. Despite the explanation, the confrontation reportedly intensified, angering other voters who viewed the councilor’s actions as harassment.

The dispute quickly escalated, resulting in Mr. Kasongole being beaten by an irate mob before police officers intervened to rescue him. He was escorted away from the scene for his safety as calm was gradually restored.

The incidents have raised concerns about voter safety and the peaceful conduct of the by-elections. Electoral stakeholders and security agencies are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation of violence in the two wards.
