Zambia Open to Reviving Ties with the U.S.

President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed Zambia’s readiness to renew and strengthen its relationship with the United States, in response to the evolving foreign policy direction under the Donald Trump administration.

Speaking during a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Michael Gonzales at State House, President Hichilema noted that despite the U.S. implementing difficult decisions—such as cutting aid—the situation presents an opportunity for Zambia to reassess and recalibrate its engagement with Washington. He described the withdrawal of aid as a “wake-up call” for Zambia to take charge of its development trajectory and deepen bilateral cooperation.

President Hichilema emphasized the need for the U.S. to accelerate investments into Zambia, especially in key economic areas, encouraging joint ventures that will benefit both nations. He also highlighted the government’s ambitious efforts in restructuring the mining industry, predicting that Zambia could produce nearly one million metric tonnes of copper this year. This anticipated growth is attributed to higher production levels and the revival of previously shut-down mines.

Ambassador Gonzales echoed the president’s sentiments, stressing the importance of resetting the Zambia-U.S. relationship to achieve tangible results. He pledged his support in transforming the partnership into one that delivers meaningful development for both countries.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe reaffirmed Zambia’s dedication to enhancing its cooperation with the United States, emphasizing the role of consistent and effective dialogue in building a stronger bilateral relationship.
