ZRA Busts Major Cigarette Smuggling Scheme in Lusaka
The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has intercepted a truck carrying 800 cases of smuggled Vikings cigarettes, preventing an estimated revenue loss of K7.8 million.
The truck, bearing registration number LZ 46 TN GP, was en route from South Africa, transiting through Chirundu, and reportedly destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, investigations revealed that the consignment had been falsely declared.
According to ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala, the truck was declared as carrying assorted household goods in transit, raising suspicions among vigilant ZRA officers. Acting on intelligence and trail monitoring, officers tracked the consignment to a warehouse in Lusaka’s Garden House area, where offloading was scheduled.
Upon inspection at the warehouse, ZRA officers discovered boxes of Vikings cigarettes concealed within the cargo. Following the discovery, the warehouse was immediately secured and sealed, while the truck and entire consignment were seized.
Mr Nzala warned importers and transporters engaging in smuggling and false declarations that such actions carry serious legal consequences, including seizure and forfeiture of goods and vehicles, as well as prosecution.
“By taking decisive action against these fraudulent activities, ZRA aims to promote legitimate trade. All importers are encouraged to make correct declarations of goods being imported,” Mr Nzala said.
He further urged the general public and transporters to assist in the fight against smuggling by reporting suspected illegal activities to the Zambia Revenue Authority.
