Jack Mwiimbu Says Lusaka Catholic Mass Looked Like a Political Rally
Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu has described Sunday’s Catholic Masses in the Lusaka Archdiocese as resembling a political party gathering rather than a purely religious service. This follows the decision by Catholic churches to read a solidarity statement in support of Archbishop Alick Banda, who has been summoned by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) over allegations linked to a ZRA Hilux vehicle.
Speaking during a media briefing, Mr. Mwiimbu—who stated that he is himself a devout Catholic—said Government observed what appeared to be political mobilisation within church congregations. He stressed that Archbishop Banda is not a political figure, but a church leader whose summoning by law enforcement has now taken on a political dimension due to public reactions.
Mr. Mwiimbu assured the nation that Government will not infringe on the constitutional rights of Archbishop Banda and that due process will be followed. However, he cautioned members of the public planning a solidarity march to the DEC to ensure they comply with the law by notifying the police.
