Fame in the Lecture Hall: Why Kay of Chanda na Kay Quit University”

Zambian rapper Kay, one half of the award-winning music duo Chanda na Kay, has revealed that he dropped out of Cavendish University Zambi due to the constant attention and unwanted recordings from fellow students during class.
Speaking on the Kenny T 1 ON 1 podcast, Kay shared how challenging it was to maintain his studies in such an environment. Enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, the rapper said he would attend class well-dressed, carrying his MacBook and phone. But every time a lecturer asked him to respond to a question, his classmates would pull out their phones and start filming him.
“It was too much,” Kay admitted, explaining that the pressure and lack of privacy became overwhelming, ultimately forcing him to stop attending lectures.
When asked by podcast host Kenny T if he planned to return to school, his musical partner Chanda jokingly remarked that Kay would probably publicize it again—just like when he first enrolled. In his defense, Kay explained that the initial publicity was unintentional. He was asked to pose with a document, thinking it was for his student ID, only to later discover that the university had shared the photo online, sparking widespread media attention.
Back in December 2020, Kay trended for his bold decision to pursue higher education, an unusual move for someone already enjoying musical fame. He said his motivation was “ulunkumbwa lwandi” (my hunger/desire), a phrase that resonated with many fans who applauded his ambition.
Now, four years later, Kay says he’s still considering returning to school, though Chanda has ruled it out, saying he no longer sees the need for tertiary education despite Kay’s earlier attempts to convince him.
