Over 100 Zambians Seek Return Home Amid Anti-Immigration Protests in South Africa

The Zambian government has continued its voluntary repatriation programme for citizens living in South Africa following anti-immigration protests reported in some parts of the country.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, 47 Zambian nationals were successfully repatriated last month through a coordinated effort involving the Office of the Vice President’s Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Zambia High Commission in Pretoria.

Permanent Secretary Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen revealed that government teams were deployed to Durban and East London on June 20, 2026, to assist Zambian nationals and facilitate the repatriation exercise.

The latest developments come as concerns continue to grow among some foreign nationals following anti-immigration demonstrations in certain areas of South Africa.

Government officials disclosed that more than 100 Zambians have so far registered their intention to return home under the voluntary repatriation programme.

The repatriation initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and other stakeholders to ensure the safe return of affected citizens.

Despite the ongoing protests, authorities have confirmed that no Zambian national has been reported injured in connection with the demonstrations.

Meanwhile, the Zambia High Commission in Pretoria has encouraged all Zambian nationals residing in South Africa to register through the ZamSA Connect platform. The online system is designed to help the government provide timely consular support and emergency assistance whenever necessary.

Officials say the Mission continues to closely monitor the situation and remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of Zambian citizens living in South Africa.

As the situation evolves, the government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that any Zambians wishing to return home can do so safely and in an organized manner.
