UNZA Students Present New Leadership at State House

Students from the University of Zambia (UNZA) yesterday marched to State House to introduce their newly elected leadership, with the incoming student union president pledging loyalty and support to President Hakainde Hichilema.
The lively gathering, chanting “Kwenyu Kwenyu,” assured President Hichilema—fondly known as Bally—of their backing as the country heads toward the 2026 general elections.
Speaking on behalf of the students, president-elect Kabaso Mwanto highlighted the urgent need to address poor sanitation at UNZA and pushed for an increase in meal allowances.
“Through the President’s education policies, Zambia is becoming a paradise on earth. My younger sister in Shang’ombo no longer struggles to pay tuition fees because they have been abolished,” Mwanto said. “That is why I urge all of us not to be swayed by propaganda from individuals seeking political mileage.”
Mwanto described President Hichilema as a leader who genuinely cares for young people and called on citizens—especially the youth—to rally behind him. He also expressed gratitude for the Zambia National Service’s planned rehabilitation works at the university.
Quoting Martin Luther King’s famous words, Mwanto added: “When he spoke of ‘I have a dream,’ I didn’t understand then, but today I do. I call upon the youth of this great nation to rise in 2026 because greater achievements are on the horizon.”
In response, President Hichilema reassured the students that their concerns were being prioritized. He noted that government efforts were underway to complete new hostels and update syllabi so academic programmes match industry demands.
“As my friends, I want you to know that this President values education at every level—from early childhood, through primary and secondary schools, to colleges and universities, including Great East Road and Ridgeway campuses,” President Hichilema affirmed.
