HH Congratulates FDD After Bright Nundwe Wins Chawama By-Election

President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) and its candidate Bright Nundwe for emerging victorious in the Chawama Constituency parliamentary by-election held yesterday. The President described the contest as tightly contested and praised the democratic spirit displayed by all stakeholders.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, President Hichilema, who also leads the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), emphasized that while elections ultimately produce a winner, their deeper purpose is to strengthen peace, unity, and harmony among citizens.

He commended the UPND, all participating candidates, and the people of Chawama for ensuring that the democratic process functioned smoothly. The President also applauded the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and law enforcement agencies for conducting a transparent, orderly, and secure election.

According to official results, Bright Nundwe of the FDD secured 8,085 votes, narrowly defeating Morgan Muunda of the UPND, who garnered 6,542 votes.

  • Elijah Siatwaambo (Independent) – 428 votes

  • Muhammad Mutete (National Congress Party) – 319 votes

  • Musukuma Ntazana (Leadership Movement) – 100 votes

  • James Phiri (National Democratic Congress) – 93 votes

⚖️ Background to the By-Election (H2)

The Chawama parliamentary seat was declared vacant following the prolonged absence of former MP Tasila Lungu, who has been in South Africa awaiting the burial of her father, former President Edgar Lungu, who died on June 5, 2025.
