Poliovirus Type 2 Detected in Lusaka

The Ministry of Health Zambia has confirmed the detection of poliovirus type 2 in an environmental sample collected from Lusaka District. The discovery was made through routine surveillance activities conducted in partnership with both local and international health stakeholders.

According to Acting Health Minister Cornelius Mweetwa, laboratory testing verified the presence of the virus, indicating that it is circulating within the community. However, authorities have clarified that no confirmed cases of paralysis have been reported at this stage.

Health officials have described the situation as a significant public health concern. The Southern Africa region remains on heightened alert following recent detections of poliovirus in Malawi, which were associated with earlier transmission linked to Zimbabwe.

Further analysis shows that the Lusaka strain closely resembles a variant previously identified in Namibia and connected to transmission in Angola. This suggests that regional spread of the virus is ongoing.

In response, the government has activated emergency interventions. These include heightened surveillance, intensified community awareness campaigns, and targeted vaccination drives focusing on high-risk children — regardless of their prior immunisation status. Authorities are also reinforcing routine immunisation programmes to curb any potential outbreak.
