Family Statement on Maria Zaloumis’ Murder Charge

The Zaloumis family has released a statement after the Zambia Police confirmed that 40-year-old Maria Zaloumis is among five people charged with the murder of 22-year-old Enock Simfukwe Kasengele.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga announced earlier today that investigations by Chowa Police Station in Kabwe had been concluded, leading to the formal charging of Maria and four others. The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear before the courts soon.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Maria’s sister, In’utu Zaloumis, acknowledged the development and reiterated their position.

“We have been informed that my sister Maria has been charged with murder alongside others,” she said. “As a family, we maintain what we have always said—that under Zambian law, every accused person is innocent until proven guilty. We pray this will also apply in Maria’s case. She is not only my sister but also a mother, and we love her deeply.”

In’utu further appealed to the public to exercise caution and compassion, stressing that Maria’s case should not be clouded by speculation or linked to the family’s other public ties.

“I urge Zambians not to judge Maria harshly or associate her situation with our mother’s role as ECZ Chairperson. These matters are entirely separate, and Maria deserves to be given a fair chance before the law,” she said.

Alongside Maria, the police have also charged Nathaniel Barthrem, a Nigerian national; Daniel Chiluwa, a farm manager; Fortune Mwitangati; and Gift Daka, all residents of the Montana farming block.
