The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed former Chipolopolo midfielder Perry Mutapa as the new head coach of the Zambia Under-20 Men’s National Team, replacing Boyd Mulwanda.
Mutapa, who is also head coach of Super League side Green Eagles, will lead a new technical bench that includes Sipho Mumbi as first assistant coach, Lameck Banda as second assistant and Masautso Tembo as strikers’ coach.
FAZ said Mutapa recently served as an assistant coach with the senior men’s national team that participated at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said the new technical team’s immediate assignment will be to prepare the Under-20 side for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations zonal qualifying tournament in Mauritius.
The tournament is scheduled to run from September 18 to 27, with FAZ tasking the new technical bench with securing qualification for the AFCON and subsequently the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
Chakatazya said the appointment is part of efforts to regenerate the focus of the Under-20 national team, which FAZ believes has not maintained the level reached by the 2017 generation that won the Under-20 AFCON and reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in South Korea.
The new technical bench now has the task of guiding the young Chipolopolo through the upcoming qualification campaign and rebuilding the team’s pathway towards continental and global competition.
