Catholic Church Rallies Behind Archbishop Banda as DEC Summons Looms
The Catholic Church has directed all parish priests in Lusaka to publicly read a statement of solidarity with Archbishop of Lusaka, Most Reverend Dr Alick Banda, during Mass today.
The directive follows the summoning of Archbishop Banda by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), where he is expected to appear tomorrow in connection with investigations into allegations that he received a Toyota Hilux from the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA). The vehicle is reportedly among those allegedly disposed of without following laid-down legal procedures.
In a formal notice addressed to all parishes, Archdiocese of Lusaka Vicar General Reverend Father Andrew Simpasa instructed that the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) statement of solidarity must be read by the presiding priest during announcements at all Masses today.
“This serves to inform all the faithful, clergy, religious, and all parish priests in the Archdiocese of Lusaka that the ZCCB Statement of Solidarity with Archbishop Most Reverend Dr Alick Banda, and the Catholic faithful in Zambia, MUST be read by the presiding priest at all Masses during the announcements on Sunday, January 4, 2026, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord,” Father Simpasa said.
Father Simpasa further invited all Catholic faithful to attend a solidarity Mass scheduled for Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka, beginning at 08:00 hours.
He explained that following the Mass, Archbishop Banda would, in compliance with the laws of the Republic of Zambia, report to the DEC offices as required.
“Accordingly, we shall be most obliged if this is complied with. May the Light of Christ continue to illumine our hearts, minds, and the soul of our nation, the Republic of Zambia,” Father Simpasa said.
