Putin Warns Gulf Leaders That Middle East Conflict Could Spiral

Russian President Vladimir Putin has held a series of urgent calls with key leaders from Persian Gulf states — including figures from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain — to warn of the danger that recent United States Armed Forces and Israel Defense Forces strikes on Iran could escalate into a broader regional war.

Putin’s discussions come amid rapidly rising tensions in the Middle East triggered by U.S.–Israeli air operations against Iranian targets and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes across the Gulf. In the calls, he described the situation as extremely volatile and urged both Gulf leaders and international partners to push for de-escalation before the crisis worsens.

The Kremlin also offered to use Russia’s close diplomatic ties with Tehran to help calm the situation, saying Moscow was in constant communication with Iranian leadership and could act as a diplomatic bridge. Putin condemned what he termed “unprovoked aggression” against Iran and emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire and negotiation to prevent wider conflict.

Gulf states have been unusual partners for such outreach — many of them traditionally aligned with the U.S. — but the risk of instability spreading across the region, especially following strikes and counter-strikes that have hit several countries, has created common ground for dialogue. Leaders from the Gulf have separately raised concerns about disruptions to security and civilian life, with some countries condemning militant actions and others pleading for restraint.

Moscow’s initiative reflects broader global concern that the situation could move beyond a bilateral dispute into a wider geopolitical crisis drawing in multiple nations. Russia’s push for diplomatic engagement — and its warnings about the catastrophic consequences of unchecked escalation — underline how connected and fragile regional security has become.

This remains a rapidly unfolding story with major implications for global diplomacy, energy markets and peace efforts in a deeply unsettled region.
