Staff Sergeant Alick Banda Dies on UN Peacekeeping Duty in CAR
A Zambian peacekeeper has died while serving in the Central African Republic (CAR) under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). The deceased has been identified as Staff Sergeant Alick Banda of the Zambia Army, whose death has been described as a significant loss to the nation.
Confirming the development, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu said Government has formally notified the next of kin of the fallen soldier. He added that arrangements have been made for the repatriation of Staff Sergeant Banda’s remains.
According to Mr Haamaundu, the mortal remains are expected to arrive in Zambia at 20:00 hours tonight, ahead of burial arrangements to be announced later.
Paying tribute, Mr Haamaundu said Staff Sergeant Banda made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of peace, both for Zambia and the international community.
“Staff Sergeant Banda made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the cause of peace. His dedication to duty reflected the highest traditions of the Zambia Defence Force and brought honour to our nation,” he said.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, noting that the loss is felt nationwide.
“Your loss is felt in every corner of this land. Staff Sergeant Banda’s service reminds us of the courage and commitment of all Zambian men and women who wear the uniform in pursuit of peace, both at home and abroad,” Mr Haamaundu said.
