Chipata Mayor George Mwanza Declares Bid for Parliamentary Seat

The political atmosphere in Chipata is beginning to heat up ahead of the 2026 general elections, as the city’s mayor George Mwanza has officially declared his intention to contest the Chipata Central parliamentary seat.

Mwanza made his ambitions public through campaign materials shared on his Facebook page. The posts featured branded T-shirts and hoodies carrying the message “Vote George Mwanza for MP Chipata Central,” clearly signaling the start of his campaign push.

The move sets the stage for what could become a competitive political contest, as the seat is currently held by Reuben Mtolo Phiri, who also serves as the country’s Minister of Agriculture.

By making his intentions known early, Mwanza appears to be positioning himself strategically ahead of the elections, aiming to build support and visibility among voters in Chipata Central.

Political observers say such early declarations are becoming more common as aspiring candidates seek to gain an advantage through sustained engagement with the electorate before the official campaign period begins.

As the 2026 elections draw closer, all eyes will be on Chipata Central to see how the contest unfolds between the incumbent and the challenger, with voters expected to play a decisive role in shaping the constituency’s political future.
