Mundubile and Makebi Handed Over to Zambia Police After UN Talks

Leading opposition figures Brian Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, have reportedly surrendered to the Zambia Police and are currently being interrogated at the Law Enforcement Agencies Command Centre near Lusaka’s Civic Centre.

According to the information provided, the two were handed over to Zambian authorities following engagements involving representatives of the United Nations and the Zambian Government.

Under the reported terms of the arrangement, the State pledged that Mundubile and Zulu would be subjected to the rule of law and due process.

The development follows days of heightened political tension after a military and security operation at a property linked to Mundubile in Kabulonga.

The operation reportedly resulted in the death of former Cabinet Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, while several senior members of the Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance, including Bishop Trevor Mwamba and former lawmaker George Chisanga, were subsequently charged with treason-related offences.

Mundubile and Zulu had reportedly sought shelter at the United Nations premises on Alick Nkhata Road, citing fears for their safety.

The Government has previously alleged that Mundubile was connected to an alleged militia and a plot threatening State security, accusations that his camp has strongly disputed.

Their surrender and subsequent interrogation mark a significant development in Zambia’s unfolding post-election political and legal crisis.
