Paul Kabuswe Denies Arrest Claims Over Copper Cathode Theft Case

Former Mines and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe has dismissed allegations that he has been arrested in connection with the reported theft of copper cathodes on the Copperbelt.

Speaking in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka, Mr. Kabuswe described the reports linking him to the high-profile case as malicious, false, and unfounded.

The former minister said the allegations are part of an attempt to divert attention from the UPND’s campaign activities ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Election.

Mr. Kabuswe claimed that those spreading the reports are seeking to undermine his political campaign and the ruling party’s growing support on the Copperbelt.

He further stated that rival political parties are increasingly feeling the impact of the UPND’s presence in the region and are resorting to misinformation.

The denial comes after police announced the arrest and charging of six individuals, including former Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Yuyi Mwala, in connection with the alleged theft of copper cathodes valued at US$448,596.

Mr. Kabuswe emphasized that he has not been arrested and urged the people of Chililabombwe Constituency to continue supporting him in the upcoming general election.

The former minister maintained that the allegations are politically motivated and have no factual basis.
