SANAC Challenges Brian Mundubile to Account for K1.5 Billion Road Contracts

Lusaka, Zambia – The Southern African Network Against Corruption (SANAC) has challenged National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile to publicly account for road contracts worth more than K1.5 billion allegedly awarded to companies in which he has an interest.

SANAC National Coordinator Christopher Mwenya said the organisation will be engaging presidential candidates on issues of public accountability as part of efforts to promote informed voter choices ahead of Zambia’s August 13, 2026 General Election.

Calls for Transparency

In a statement, Mwenya said individuals seeking the country’s highest office should be prepared to answer legitimate public questions about their record in public service.

“As an organisation that promotes transparency and accountability, it remains critical that those seeking election remain accountable to the electorate. Over the next few weeks, we will seek to ask questions about the various candidates. Today we begin with Mr. Brian Mundubile,” he said.

According to SANAC, road contracts valued at more than K1.5 billion were awarded between 2014 and 2020 to companies in which Mundubile allegedly has an interest. The contracts reportedly covered projects in Northern, Eastern, Western, and Central provinces.

Questions Raised

SANAC has given Mr. Mundubile until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026, to respond to several questions, including:

• Whether he declared his interests in the companies to Parliament while serving as a Member of Parliament.
• Whether he is willing to make that declaration public.
• Whether he can publish details of all road contracts awarded to his companies, including contract values, advance payments, tender documents, completion certificates, and the number of kilometres completed.
• Whether he is willing to visit one of the completed road projects with the media and members of the public.
• Whether an independent engineer, auditor, or inspector verified the completed works.

Mwenya emphasized that the organisation’s inquiries should not be interpreted as allegations of wrongdoing.

“These are not accusations. They are questions any citizen is entitled to ask of any person seeking the presidency, and they are questions Mr. Mundubile alone has the documents to answer. If the works were done, the record will show it, and we will say so publicly,” he stated.

Background

The statement comes months after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced in March 2026 that it had recorded a warn-and-caution statement from Mr. Mundubile concerning the awarding of road construction contracts valued at more than K1.5 billion between 2014 and 2020 to companies in which he allegedly has an interest.

At the time of publication, Mr. Mundubile had not commented on SANAC’s latest challenge, as efforts to reach him were unsuccessful.
