Mundubile Rejects Election Results, Says NRPUP Will Challenge Outcome in Court
NRPUP President Brian Mundubile has rejected the announced results of Zambia’s 2026 presidential election, saying his party does not believe they accurately reflect the electoral process and will challenge disputed results through lawful channels.
NRPUP president Brian Mundubile has rejected the announced results of Zambia’s 2026 presidential election, saying his party has documented a number of alleged irregularities and intends to pursue legal avenues to challenge the disputed outcome.
Speaking after the announcement of the presidential results, Mundubile said the NRPUP had collected evidence relating to the security, transportation and handling of ballot papers and other electoral materials.
He also cited alleged discrepancies between figures recorded at polling stations and those subsequently announced during the results process.
“The results announced last night are not results that we accept as a true reflection of what took place across this election,” Mundubile said.
NRPUP to Challenge Disputed Results
Mundubile said the party had preserved records and other evidence which would be submitted to the relevant legal institutions within the prescribed period.
He stressed that the party would rely on evidence and established legal processes rather than political confrontation.
“We will challenge those results for which we believe there are lawful grounds to do so,” he said.
The opposition leader also argued that, regardless of the declared presidential outcome, the number of votes secured by NRPUP represented significant support for the party and its political message.
He pledged to continue representing the citizens who supported his candidature.
Mundubile Rejects Insurgency Allegations
Mundubile strongly rejected allegations linking the NRPUP, its campaign structures or people associated with the party to an alleged insurgency or threat to national security.
He maintained that his campaign had been based on peaceful democratic participation and said neither he nor the party had advocated the use of violence to obtain political power.
“There will be no call from me for violence. There will be no call from the NRPUP for retaliation,” Mundubile said.
He subsequently appealed to his supporters to remain calm and avoid provocation while the party pursues its legal options.
Concern Over Davies Chisopa’s Detention
Mundubile also raised concerns over the detention of his campaign manager, Davies Chisopa, and demanded what he described as an immediate, lawful and transparent explanation from authorities.
He said that if Chisopa was suspected of committing an offence, authorities should present evidence and allow the allegations to be tested before a court of law.
Mundubile further called for Chisopa’s rights under Zambian law to be respected.
Mundubile Says He Is Under Protection
The NRPUP leader disclosed that he was currently under protection after allegedly receiving threats against his life.
He also gave his account of an incident at his residence, alleging that armed men entered the property and that gunshots were fired while he and others were unarmed and hiding.
According to Mundubile, former Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya was shot during the incident, which he said he personally witnessed.
Mundubile further alleged that Kafwaya was subsequently reported missing and that his family had not received an adequate explanation concerning his whereabouts or condition.
He called on authorities to clarify whether Kafwaya was in the custody of any state agency and, if so, to explain the legal basis for his detention and provide his family and lawyers with access.
He said that if Kafwaya was not in state custody, authorities should establish his whereabouts and investigate the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
Electoral Materials and GEN 20 Forms
Mundubile also repeated concerns over what he described as possible electoral manipulation and ballot tampering.
Among the issues he wants investigated are the handling of electoral documentation, ballot transportation and security, and alleged discrepancies identified by party representatives.
He also referred to concerns surrounding the so-called GEN 20 forms, which are central to the verification and aggregation of presidential election results.
Mundubile said the allegations should ultimately be determined by evidence and through the appropriate legal processes.
Appeals for Peace
Despite rejecting the presidential results, Mundubile urged NRPUP supporters to remain peaceful and avoid retaliation.
He said neither he nor the NRPUP would call for violence and urged supporters not to allow anger or provocation to undermine what he described as a peaceful democratic movement.
The opposition leader also appealed to regional and international partners, election observers and democratic institutions to continue monitoring developments in Zambia.
He argued that concerns surrounding alleged political violence, arrests, intimidation and electoral conduct should not simply disappear following the declaration of election results.
Mundubile concluded by urging Zambians to remain calm and safe as his party pursues legal avenues over the disputed election results and other matters arising from the electoral process.
The NRPUP’s next major test will be whether the evidence it says it has gathered can meet the legal threshold required to overturn or challenge the disputed results.
