Chella Tukuta Speaks for Himself, Not Government – Hamasaka
State House Chief Communication Specialist Clayson Hamasaka has distanced the Government from comments attributed to presidential biographer Chella Tukuta, saying his views should not be interpreted as official Government policy.
Mr. Hamasaka said Mr. Tukuta, who has reportedly made comments concerning people who supported the Tonse Alliance, has the right to express his personal opinions, including through social media platforms such as Facebook.
However, he stressed that such views should not be taken as representing the position of the Government or State House.
Hamasaka Distances Government From Tukuta’s Comments
According to Mr. Hamasaka, Mr. Tukuta should be allowed to express himself and make whatever comments he wishes, provided he does so within the law.
He nevertheless emphasised that there is a clear distinction between an individual’s political views and official Government policy.
Mr. Hamasaka said comments made by individuals should not automatically be attributed to the Government simply because those individuals may have connections to the ruling party or hold public positions.
“His views should not be interpreted as Government policy or the official position of the State,” Mr. Hamasaka said.
The remarks come amid political tensions following the 2026 general elections, with social media discussions increasingly focusing on political affiliations and the treatment of people associated with different political parties and alliances.
Every Zambian Has a Right to Public Employment
Mr. Hamasaka also addressed concerns surrounding political affiliation and appointments to public positions.
He said political differences should not prevent qualified Zambians from being employed or appointed to public positions.
According to him, individuals should be considered for public positions based on whether they meet the required qualifications and other relevant requirements.
He noted that Zambia has citizens with divergent political opinions, but that such differences should not automatically disqualify individuals from participating in public service.
UPND Members’ Views Are Not Automatically Government Policy
Mr. Hamasaka further pointed out that many members and supporters of the United Party for National Development (UPND) regularly express their opinions on political and national issues.
However, he said their individual comments should not automatically be interpreted as official Government positions.
The clarification appears aimed at drawing a line between personal political commentary and statements formally issued on behalf of the Government.
As political debate continues following the elections, the distinction between individual opinions, party positions and official Government communication is likely to remain important.
